General requirements to printing preparations

Design requirements
1. Books and magazines’ designs must besides the final format also account for a 5 mm bleed on every external edge and 3 mm on the spine in case of perfect binding. In publications cut to format after printing the text must be located at least 5 mm from the edges of the final format.
NB! Designs for adhesive bindings should add at least 3-5 mm to the inside runners (depending on book thickness), in order to prevent the design from being too close to the spine, ensuring the readability of the book.
2. In publication designs the use of rich black should be avoided in black texts and objects. (Other colours must be removed from under black!)
3. Black overprint must be defined for black (100% black) objects and text on colour areas.
4. The use of small (8 points or smaller) white text (knock out) must be avoided in coloured objects.  The minimum size of text in italics or with serifs is 9 points.

Requirements to colour separation
The following colour separation parameters should be used in image processing in Adobe Photoshop according to the paper to be used in printing:
1. All colour pictures and objects must be in CMYK (not RGB or Lab) format. All SPOT colours used must also be converted to CMYK format.
2. Image resolution upon scanning must be equal to double screen size (e.g. for 150 lpi print the image resolution must be 300 dpi).

Requirements to files
1. Tallinna Raamatutrükikoda accepts PDF and PS files or most common graphic and layout program versions.
2. The materials sent to the printhouse digitally must also include a layout. The place on the page to which advertising or other object will later be attached must be empty (clean).
3. All colour images and objects in files presented to the printhouse must be in CMYK (not RGB or Lab) format. All SPOT colours used must also be converted into CMYK format.
4. The files sent must be in the so-called pure print format, i.e. in 1:1 scale. For the so-called overflow print the sent pages must also have a 5 mm bleed on every edge.
5. For perfect binding an additional 3 mm of white area must be added for the spine (see Design requirements p. 1).
6. The resolution of images in the files must be equal to double screen size (e.g. for 150 lpi print the scanning resolution of the image must be 300 dpi).
7. Monochrome objects in vector format must not contain CMYK or RGB colours.
8. All fonts used in designs must be included among the files sent to the printhouse.
9. For the best printing results the files should also include a proof impression that must be made with Eurostandart colours and toned according to the tonality of the paper to be used for printing.

In preparing documents for sending to the printhouse we ask you to consider the following recommendations:

1. All CMYK-colours must have Edit Colour menu features:
    Type=Process, Model=CMYK.
2. All images (illustrations) must have Links Manager menu status Up to date.
3. The flag Store copy in publication menu Links option must be removed.
4. Links in documents the layout of which is done in PageMaker version 6.5 can be altered in the global options dialogue: Utilities/Plug-ins/Global ink options.
5. All half-tone images must be in CMYK.

1. The files released will be gathered with the command Collect for output (the files must have different names).
2. All CMYK-colours (menu Edit Colours) must have the feature Process Separation.
3. Only SPOT-colours released on separate films can be without the Process Separation feature.
4. All layout illustrations must have the Picture Usage menu feature OK, not Missing or Modified.
5. All colour screen images must be in CMYK.
6. QuarkXpress version 4.0 does not process bleed, and therefore at least version 4.0.2 or higher must be used.

1. PostScript texts consist of two parts; description file *.pfb and scale file *.pfm.
Both parts must be presented with the document.
2. Fonts used in illustrations design must also be presented.
3. Pirate or defective fonts cannot be used.
4. Layout must not be done with Windows or MacOS system fonts.
5. Only send files used in the given document.
6. Do not alter original fonts.

1. Lines thinner than 0.25 points must not be used.
2. Hairline setting must not be used.
3. Line image resolution must be between 600 dpi to 1200 dpi.
4. All monochrome half-tone images must be saved as grayscale images.
5. All line images must be saved as bitmap images.
6. All colour illustrations must be saved in CMYK format before setting into layout. Do not leave them in RGB.
7. Picture files must be in TIFF or EPS format.
8. All images must be inverted and mirrored in Photoshop (inversion in the layout programme is too demanding on the RAM and reduces image quality, especially in TIFF files).
9. All image enlargements and reductions should be done in Photoshop.
10. All cutting should be done in Photoshop (otherwise it overloads the RAM).
11. All screen graphics must be done in Photoshop.
12. Vector graphics (lines) must be done in the design programme you use.
13. In placing objects into the document do not use the copy-paste feature.
14. We recommend that you use higher CorelDraw versions (from 8.0).
